The Blu-ray disc or BD is the name of an optical disc. In other words, it is a medium of storage crafted to surpass the standard format of DVD. The chief purpose of designing a BD is to store PS3 games, high definition videos and other data. A single layered BD disc can store up to 25 GB of data while a dual layered BD disc has the capacity of holding 50 GB of data.
The term Blu-ray disc has originated from the word ‘blue-violet laser’, used for reading the disc. Although the physical dimensions of a BD are the same as a standard DVD, it can store 6 times more data than the DVD. |
